The random number generator (RNG) is at the core of modern video slots, whose design has changed dramatically compared with fully mechanical cabinets. The RNG is a microprocessor similar to those used in computers. This microprocessor creates strings of random numbers, sometimes generating several thousand every second.

There are two types of RNG: true RNGs and so-called pseudo-random number generators, where sequences are produced by computer algorithms. In a pseudo-random generator, the results should be random, but they are actually determined by an initial value, or seed. If you know that seed, the output can be manipulated or predicted.

In practice, true RNGs are used rarely because they are too complex and do not always generate perfectly random values over the long term. Pseudo-random generators, on the other hand, are almost everywhere, from electronic games to cryptography. Even though they are called “pseudo” RNGs, their results are as close to true randomness as possible. When the seed is not revealed, the numbers cannot be predicted or reproduced.

Every game in an online casino, whether it is slots, blackjack, roulette or video poker, is controlled by an RNG, more precisely a pseudo-RNG. The continuously generated numbers correspond to specific reel positions. The moment a player presses the Play or Spin button, the outcome is based on the numbers produced at that exact fraction of a second. This means players cannot predict the symbol combination that will land, and casinos cannot set a slot so that the jackpot drops only once every few months. If an RNG is in place, the game simply cannot be rigged.
