Random number generators (RNGs) are the foundation and industry standard for modern slots, which have evolved dramatically from the days of purely mechanical machines. An RNG is a microprocessor, just like the ones used in computers. This microprocessor continuously produces random sequences of numbers; in fact, it generates thousands of sequences every second.

There are two types of RNG: true random number generators and the so-called pseudo-random number generators, or PRNGs, which rely on computational algorithms to produce long sequences of numbers. PRNGs appear random, but they are actually determined by a seed value or key. If the seed is known, the numbers can be reproduced and predicted. True random generators are rarely used because they are extremely complex and often fail to deliver true randomness over long periods. PRNGs, on the other hand, are found almost everywhere, from video games to cryptography, because even though they are labeled “pseudo,” their results are as close to random as practically possible. The numbers they generate cannot reasonably be predicted or reproduced when the seed value is unknown.

Every virtual casino game, including slots, virtual blackjack, roulette, and video poker, is controlled by an RNG or PRNG. The constantly generated numbers correspond to reel positions. The instant a player presses the Spin or Play button, the most recently generated number determines the outcome. This happens within a fraction of a second, making it impossible for players to predict which combination will appear or to count symbols. Casinos, likewise, cannot set the machine to pay a jackpot every few months, for example. If a game uses an RNG, it cannot be manipulated in any way.

The RNG is often linked to a slot’s hit frequency. Hit frequency indicates how often a winning combination appears and in slots ranges from 3% to 40%. A hit frequency of 20%, for instance, means that 20% of spins will produce a win. These numbers can be confusing, because a 3% hit frequency may seem unappealing, yet such games typically give players a chance to win a huge jackpot. Video poker games, by contrast, often have a hit frequency of 40% to 45%, but in half of those wins the player simply recovers the original wager.

Another important figure players should consider when choosing a slot is the return to player percentage (RTP). RTP shows what portion of all wagers placed on a particular game will be returned to players as winnings over time. In land-based slots, RTP varies widely, but most video slots return about 90%. Online slots are even more generous, often exceeding 95%. The house edge is simply the reverse of the RTP: if a game has a 95% RTP, the house edge is 5%.

Paylines, the specific positions where matching symbols must land, are among the most important aspects of slot machines. Early physical slots had a single payline that ran across the middle of the reels. When three matching symbols lined up, the player collected the corresponding payout. Modern video slots feature multiple paylines in various shapes, including V shapes, inverted Vs, zigzags, and more. Basic video slots have at least 5 paylines, but in some games that number can reach 25 or even 100.

When you start playing a particular slot, you will see several indicators, one of which is Lines. This shows how many paylines are active. You can easily adjust the number of active paylines; remember, the more paylines you activate, the more chances you have to win.

Tip: You must place a wager on every active payline, so if you are betting $1 on a 20-line slot, your total stake per spin will be $20.

Traditionally, slot machines pay for matching symbols that appear from left to right. Many modern games, however, include a “win both ways” feature, meaning winning combinations can also form from right to left. For obvious reasons, these games have become incredibly popular: the ways to win are effectively doubled. Another recently introduced feature is the “all ways” win system, which essentially removes paylines and allows players to collect wins for every possible combination. To score a win, you simply need at least three matching symbols on consecutive reels. These slots usually display the number of ways to win, commonly 243, 720, 1024, or even 3125 ways.

Different games offer different coin denominations, and unlike old mechanical machines, modern video slots let you change the coin value and the overall size of your bet. Many games offer denominations of $0.01 and are widely known as “penny slots.” In general, the maximum denomination is $1, but there are slots with much higher values. Your total bet per spin is determined by the chosen denomination, the number of active paylines, and the number of coins you wish to wager on each line. Always keep these three factors in mind before playing for real money. For example, you can bet $0.01 per line, which is almost nothing, but if the game has 100 active lines, you will still be wagering $1 per spin.

Slot games also have a Max Bet option that raises your wager to the maximum number of lines and the highest coin value.
