Video poker, also known as Draw Poker, gives the player five cards from a standard 52-card deck (deuces through aces). You can choose to hold or replace any of them to make a winning hand. To start a round, first place a bet. In most games you can wager from one to five coins in a denomination of your choice, usually between $0.05 and $5. After you press the Deal/Draw button, you will receive five cards that you may hold or exchange. Select all of the cards you want to keep, whether that is one card or all five.

Your goal is to build a winning hand, so choose carefully. Press Deal again and the cards you discarded will be replaced. The game instantly tells you whether your new hand wins. The payout depends on the hand’s strength and the size of your wager. In video poker, betting the maximum number of coins is smart because the payout for a Royal Flush (the top straight flush) is far higher than the money awarded for a one-coin bet. The Royal Flush is the best possible hand, but hitting it is not easy. For that reason every new player should learn which hands win in video poker and how they are ranked.

Because video poker is derived from classic poker, the winning hands are very similar to those you may already know from the table game. There are slight deviations from the traditional rules and these differ with each video poker variant. A wild card is simply a substitute card that can replace any other card in the deck and it is commonly used in poker games. For example, if you have two kings, two fives, and a joker, the joker can replace a king. In this case you would make a Full House instead of Two Pair, meaning you win much more thanks to the wild card. This special card appears in some games because it makes it easier to form winning hands and adds an element of surprise.

While jokers usually act as wild cards, other cards can serve the same role in video poker. One of the most popular variants, for instance, designates all four deuces as wild. The twos are called Deuces and the game is named Deuces Wild. Another popular version is Joker Poker, where a joker is added to the deck and used as a wild. In Double Joker Poker there are two jokers, in other words, two wild cards.

In general, video poker games with wilds do not pay for Jacks or Better or Two Pair. The reason is the higher likelihood of putting together a winning hand when wilds are present. To balance this, the games remove the two lowest-ranking hands. Another feature of wild-card video poker is that it usually offers two types of Royal Flush: a natural Royal Flush and a wild Royal Flush. The difference is obvious, the wild Royal Flush contains a wild card. In these games, the natural Royal Flush is always the top-paying hand.

Deuces Wild

This is another extremely popular video poker variant and, as the name implies, it features wild cards. All the twos in the deck, or deuces, act as wilds and can replace any other card in the hand. The full-pay version of Deuces Wild returns 100.76 percent, but unfortunately casinos rarely offer it. Players usually encounter lower-pay games with an RTP of about 98 to 99 percent.

The lowest qualifying hand is Three of a Kind. New winning hands are also added: Four Deuces, which pays differently depending on the specific game, and Five of a Kind, which consists of four cards of the same rank plus a deuce.

All Aces

All Aces is a popular video poker variant found at many of the largest online casinos. With a potential payout of 99.92 percent, it is quite generous and is often favored by experienced players. The game is a 7/5 version, but the main difference here is the boosted payout for Four of a Kind, especially when it consists of four aces, which pays 400 times the bet. If the Four of a Kind contains 2s, 3s, or 4s, it pays 100 times the bet, and if it contains 5s through kings, it pays 50 times. The payout for Two Pair is the same as in Jacks or Better, returning even money.

Tens or Better

Tens or Better does not offer huge payouts, but it suits beginners because the wins are smaller yet more frequent. The reason is that the lowest paying hand in this variant is a Pair of tens or better. As a result you will score wins more often, even if sometimes you only break even. Several versions of Tens or Better exist with slightly different paytables, but a Full House and a Flush usually pay six and five times the bet respectively.

The game includes a gamble feature that is triggered after every win. You can press the Double button to enter the feature or the Collect button to return to the main game. If you choose to gamble, you will receive five cards, one face up. You then choose one of the four face-down cards that you think has a higher value than the revealed card. Guess right and your winnings are doubled; guess wrong and you lose the amount you just won.
